I was given this Colt 45 by my son who knew I was looking for one. I knew nothing about its manufacture or worth until asking about such from members of a California gun-enthusiast's forum. I learned quite a bit, including the need to refer to this by the name of the frame's manufacturer (Essex) rather than as a Colt. It does make sense, as the frame is the only part with a serial number.
